Gasoline

The government says that the recession is slowing, but we still see high prices, people looking for jobs, and inflation. Today Americans are trying to save money, but they are paying about $4. 00 per gallon at the gasoline pumps. What are they supposed to do? People are trying to deal with the high price of gasoline. Many drivers have made the decision to leave their car at home and go to work by bus. Others think to move closer to work so they don’t have to drive so far. Some groups have begun carpools to save money and gasoline. Some businesses are giving their employee gas cards for bonuses and birthday gifts. Other businesses are promoting that their employees stay home and use technology by accessing a computing cloud to do their work. I’m saving money every day because I don’t have a car, I take the public bus, and I walk up the hill by Hoban.

Osama bin Laden’s death

On May 1st, 2011, Navy Seals raided a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. There, they found bin Laden hidin and he was shot twice. Once in the head and once in the chest. One of his sons was reportedly killed in the raid too. It only took ten years to find him, but he was finally brought to justce. People gathered outside the White House as the President made the anncouncement, shouting USA and singing the Star Spangled Banner. There is a great sense of nationalism in our country right now along with a sense of relief or finality. How long will it last? Al Queda has confirmed the death and is planning their revenge. They said, "Soon, God willing, their happiness will turn to sadness," it said, "their blood will be mingled with their tears."

As a nation we should be happy that justice finally came, but we should also be cautious. The tenth anniversary of 9- 11 is coming up and I would expect some retalliation. The War on terror is not over. There are many groups all over the Middle East and one man’s death will not stop terrorism in its tracks.

Jeffrey Heller

Human Rights lawyer, registered nurse and apparent cyclist Jeffrey Heller spoke to Mrs. Mohan and Mr. Milo's classes about U.S. immigration policy. He is riding his bike from New York to Iowa (1400 miles) with the hopes of raising awareness and money for Human Rights First and their efforts to help refugees gain asylum in the United States. When he pulled into the Hoban parking lot, his odometer had just hit 499miles. Follow Jeffrey on his blog http://rideforhumanrights.wordpress.com/about/.

The Tribe

Dan Haren (Los Angeles Angels) ended the Indians' eight-game winning streak Tuesday night in style. Not only did he out-pitch Fausto Carmona, but he threw a one-hitter in the Angels' 2-0 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 43,529. The loss ended the Indians' longest winning streak since they won 10 straight in August 2008. Now the real test for the Indians begins. How will they respond to the end of the streak? They were off to their best start since the 2002 club opened the year at 11-1. After that impressive start, the 2002 Indians lost nine of their next 10 games.

I think the Indians will keep playing as well as they have been. They have some great talent on the team, such as Adam Everett and Lou Marson, but we also have some players who aren't so hot, like Fausto Carmona, who was a reason our streak is broken. This will, however, be one of the greater Cleveland Indians seasons

Tainted Meat, Infected Dairy, and Disaster- Stricken Japan

Well, it's official; the lives of the people of Japan have just reached a NEW ultimate low this week. A tsunami and a 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11 were the starters of what seems to be one big fire of chaos and disaster in Japan. Contamination, as reported earlier Saturday by Shino Yuasa in Toyko and Eric Talmadge of the Associated Press (Yahoo!), has reached nearby towns of the nuclear plant explosion which happened a few days ago. Radiation levels in spinach and milk from farms near the tsunami-crippled facility exceeded government safety limits were found Saturday by officials on the site. Small amounts of radiation were also found in tap water throughout the nearby villages. These are only a few of the cascade of unimaginable disasters that have hit Japan's eastern coast. The 9.0-magnitude earthquake caused the tsunami Friday. It is estimated that some 7,600 people died as a result of the tsunami. 11,000 people or more are still missing and some 452,000 are living in shelters currently. "The failure of Fukushima's backup power systems, which were supposed to keep cooling systems going in the aftermath of the earthquake, let uranium fuel overheat and were a "main cause" of the crisis," said Nishiyama of the nuclear safety agency. Perhaps Japan will recover soon, but all that be said is that Japan's condition is currently worse than any other related issues. The tsunami that swept through Japan's eastern coast was three times as bad as that of the aftermath of the 2005 hit by Hurricane Katrina.

U.S. Public Debt

According to the U.S. National Debt Clock, as of March 15, 2011, the outstanding public debt is over $14,000,000,000,000.00. Another way to look at the debt is that every person owes $46,620.00 for his share of the U.S public debt. In 1984 the national debt was 1.5 trillion dollars. In 1999 it was about 5 trillion dollars, now it is over 14 trillion dollars.

China and Japan own nearly half of the U.S debt that is owned by foreign governments.

From my point of view this is a bigger number than I have ever seen before. I’m a immigrant and this is great responsibility to try to bring the number down. One of my questions is how can we help the country with this problem. Also, how can we stop this increase?

Not Giving In

As you than already heard there is a massive union protest among the people of the state of Wisconsin. The protest started a few weeks ago when Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker put restrictions on collective bargaining in order to save money since the state may be facing economical shortfalls this year. So the question is why are they peopled mad? Well many Wisconsinites are furious about collective bargaining rights that are going to be stripped away from them which means it will take away rights to negotiate pensions, working conditions and benefits. Now that’s a very big deal if you’re a struggling family. So to further there position and to stand tall the teenagers of Wisconsin are playing to join the march.

World War I

Washington (CNN) --
Frank Buckles, the last living U.S. World War I veteran, has died, a spokesman for his family said Sunday. He was 110.
Lawmakers Monday began to move ahead with proposed resolutions that would allow his casket to be displayed at the Capitol Rotunda, and plans were already in the works for his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Buckles "died peacefully in his home of natural causes" early Sunday morning, the family said in a statement sent to CNN late Sunday by spokesman David DeJonge.
Buckles marked his 110th birthday on February 1, but his family had earlier told CNN he had slowed considerably since last fall, according his daughter Susannah Buckles Flanagan, who lives at the family home near Charles Town, West Virginia.
Buckles, who served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe during what was then known as the "Great War," rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended.

People such as Frank Buckles who have dedicated their lives to our country should definitely be rewarded with honor and the recognition that goes along with being buried at Arlington Cemetary.

Facebook versus self esteem

Do you have a Facebook? Researchers at Cornell University conducted the study that proved that Facebook boosts people’s egos. A mirrior tends to remind people of their flaws; who they really are. Facebook can show positive, fun-loving sides to people. It’s not a different version of others, just the bright side. In a recent study, sixty three students were left alone in a computer lab. The computers either had Facebook open or were turned off with a mirror next to them. The students on Facebook had three minutes to look at their page and then all of the students had to answer a questionaire that measured their self-esstem. The Facebookers received more postive feedback about themselves than the others. Some people do say the internet is bad, but Facebook can offer such a self-esstem booster! There are people who bully and things, but the fact is that it can also make people laugh and feel good about themselves.

The Big Come Up

This past Sunday, hundreds of celebrities gathered in the Staples Center in Los Angeles to celebrate the 53rd annual Grammy Awards. Notable musicians in attendance included The Black Keys, comprised of Akron's own Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney. It was the duo's first time at the Grammy's, but they were nominated for four separate awards! Much to Akron's satisfaction, the band went home with two of the four- a notable accomplishment. In the pre-televised portion of the Grammy's, they were awarded Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Performance by a a Duo or Group with Vocals for their song, "Tighten Up". On top of that, Carney's brother, Michael, won a Grammy for Best Recording Package for the band's latest album, "Brothers". Being a fan from the 330 and having seen The Black Keys play live, I believe they definitely deserved to be acknowledged for their talent and hard work.

Lindsay Low-hand

It’s nothing new seeing Lindsay Lohan in the news for getting herself in trouble. The sweet little girl from The Parent Trap has now been to rehab five times and was just released from her last session one month ago. As far as we know, since she’s been out she has been doing well and trying to get her life back on track. Although, that may have ended this past week. Lindsay was spotted wearing a $2500 one of a kind necklace that was reported stolen on January 22. She denies this accusation and says her stylist gave it to her to wear. The LAPD has filed a service warrant but, in their research found that “prior to the warrant, the necklace was returned.” The store Kamofie & Company has given the LAPD a surveillance video of Lindsay in their store the day the necklace disappeared. This isn’t the first time she has been accused of stealing, but the last few times have been overlooked and unpunished. This time, it is being investigated and if found guilty, she will be going to jail. No more rehab visits or second chances.

A Second Chance

Many people know the story of Ted Williams- a homeless man who grew to fame because of his "golden 'radio' voice". After leaving his family, discovering drugs and alcohol and throwing his life away, Williams was discovered and named with a voice for radio. He told people had had been sober for 2 and a half years and was trying to get his life back together and was even offered many jobs. He even appeared with Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira on the Today Show. However, these past two weeks, the media discovered that he was lying and hasn't been sober for 2 years. In fact, he is still having problems with his addictions. He appeared on the Dr. Phil show and admitted that he had still been drinking and is not as sober as he claimed. He is now on his way back to rehab. Even though Williams is still having problems, he is trying to fix it, that's why he's going back to rehab. Everyone deserves a second chance and even though he messed up the first time, he is still a voice for the homeless. Sometimes it takes many fails until someone gets something right. We, as a society, should believe in Williams and support him...dreams do come true with work.

Guns

On January 8th, in Tuscon Arizona, during a meeting addressed by Gabrielle Giffords a man by the name of Jared Loughner killed six people and injured nineteen with gunshot wombs. Gabrielle Gifford was one of the people injured and was believed to me the Loughners main target. She was shot in the head yet did not die and is still recovering. Among the ones who did die though, was Christina Green. She was only nine years old and was born on another day of American horror, September 11, 2001. She was there to support Gabrielle Giffords while just being elected to her school’s student council. The event has affected many people. Jared Loughner had a mental illness and after this horrible attack, people are beginning to question whether or not those who have a mental illness should be prohibited to have guns.

I believe that after shootings like this and Virginia Tech, America should keep a greater watch on those given guns. Overall, the shooting is a tragedy in American history.
