Gasoline

The government says that the recession is slowing, but we still see high prices, people looking for jobs, and inflation. Today Americans are trying to save money, but they are paying about $4. 00 per gallon at the gasoline pumps. What are they supposed to do? People are trying to deal with the high price of gasoline. Many drivers have made the decision to leave their car at home and go to work by bus. Others think to move closer to work so they don’t have to drive so far. Some groups have begun carpools to save money and gasoline. Some businesses are giving their employee gas cards for bonuses and birthday gifts. Other businesses are promoting that their employees stay home and use technology by accessing a computing cloud to do their work. I’m saving money every day because I don’t have a car, I take the public bus, and I walk up the hill by Hoban.

Osama bin Laden’s death

On May 1st, 2011, Navy Seals raided a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. There, they found bin Laden hidin and he was shot twice. Once in the head and once in the chest. One of his sons was reportedly killed in the raid too. It only took ten years to find him, but he was finally brought to justce. People gathered outside the White House as the President made the anncouncement, shouting USA and singing the Star Spangled Banner. There is a great sense of nationalism in our country right now along with a sense of relief or finality. How long will it last? Al Queda has confirmed the death and is planning their revenge. They said, "Soon, God willing, their happiness will turn to sadness," it said, "their blood will be mingled with their tears."

As a nation we should be happy that justice finally came, but we should also be cautious. The tenth anniversary of 9- 11 is coming up and I would expect some retalliation. The War on terror is not over. There are many groups all over the Middle East and one man’s death will not stop terrorism in its tracks.

Human Rights lawyer, registered nurse and apparent cyclist Jeffrey Heller spoke to Mrs. Mohan and Mr. Milo's classes about U.S. immigration policy. He is riding his bike from New York to Iowa (1400 miles) with the hopes of raising awareness and money for Human Rights First and their efforts to help refugees gain asylum in the United States. Dan Haren (Los Angeles Angels) ended the Indians' eight-game winning streak Tuesday night in style. Not only did he out-pitch Fausto Carmona, but he threw a one-hitter in the Angels' 2-0 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 43,529. The loss ended the Indians' longest winning streak since they won 10 straight in August 2008. Now the real test for the Indians begins. How will they respond to the end of the streak? They were off to their best start since the 2002 club opened the year at 11-1. After that impressive start, the 2002 Indians lost nine of their next 10 games.

I think the Indians will keep playing as well as they have been. They have some great talent on the team, such as Adam Everett and Lou Marson, but we also have some players who aren't so hot, like Fausto Carmona, who was a reason our streak is broken. This will, however, be one of the greater Cleveland Indians seasons
